Lindsey Johnson, Senior Capstone Project

This abstract entitled Advance Directives: Heightening awareness among the nursing population, was written by UC prelicensure seniors for their capstone. Lindsey Johnson is a Sigma Theta Tau International Beta Iota member.

This is a synopsis of the Capstone project. After our IRB form was approved, we sent out a pre-test to the entire College of Nursing for the purpose of needs-assessment. Our results indicated that the majority of students did not have advance directives (ADs) nor did the majority feel confident discussing them with their patients. Also, a large percentage of students felt that lack of education was a significant barrier in completion of ADs. This data supported our literature research and thus we decided to continue with our plan of holding a free AD workshop for anyone interested in attending to learn more about ADs. The workshop was held on May 18 and had 16 attendees. The presenter was a paralegal from Tri-health who works in the safety and risk management department and deals with AD issues on a regular basis. We developed and issued a post-test. Fifteen participants stated they had a better understanding of ADs and that they felt more confident discussing ADs with their patients after our presentation (1 person left both questions blank). Eleven participants stated they now plan on completing ADs, while 4 said maybe and 1 said she will discuss ADs with her husband.
